These rock layers are more than 2500 million years old and are built from iron and
silicate rich sediments on an ancient seafloor. The pressure of overlaying sediments
hardened the structure, then horizontal pressure caused cracks and finally the lowering
sea-level made the river erode the gorges you can see today. |
