This picture shows the main entrance from inside the tunnel. Sometimes you have
to walk through knee deep water to reach the other end. In the middle of the tunnel
a rock fall created a hole to the sky. The tunnel was a hide-out for Jandamarra
who first was an aboriginal stockman but soon became a tracker helping the police
because of his skills. So he even had to follow some members of his tribe and he reached
a point where the loyality to his tribe came over him, so that he killed a policeman at
Lillimooloora to free some of his men. He had been on the run for three years despite
he was wounded. Finally he was killed near his hide-out at Tunnel Creek in 1897. |
