Maria Island is famous as a paradise for ornithologists. Eleven endemic bird species can be
observed here. In addition you can see Forester kangaroos, emus and barren geese during
daylight. The landscape is a mixture of sand and limestone cliffs as well as nice beaches.
There is a magnificient sea fauna around the island so that it is worth doing dives. In the
beginning of the 19th century the island was used as a penal colony for eight years. If you
book accomodation on the island you might sleep in one of the old buildings from that time.
